Cornish Shrimper

About the Cornish Shrimper

The Cornish Shrimper 19, along with its slightly larger counterpart, the Shrimper 21, is one of the most well-established sailing cruisers, with nearly 1,400 boats built since 1980.

Its enduring success is due to a combination of:

  • Reliable and reassuring sailing performance
  • Practical accommodation for its size
  • Robust construction
  • Exceptional versatility

With a lifting keel and purpose-built trailer, the Shrimper can be towed by a large estate car, allowing owners to explore a wide range of cruising destinations. Its classic lines also contribute to its lasting appeal.

Additional benefits include:

  • Easy storage and maintenance ashore
  • Cost-effective launching and recovery via slipway
  • Engine options: outboard or 9hp Yanmar inboard diesel
  • Relatively low maintenance costs

Prices typically start from around £7,000 for older models, and these boats are known for retaining their value well.

Shrimper Sailing Community

Shrimper owners benefit from a highly active and enthusiastic Shrimper Owners’ Association (SOA), which provides:

  • Technical advice and support
  • A comprehensive online resource
  • Organised sailing events and rallies

A highlight of the calendar is the annual International Shrimpers’ Week, offering opportunities to cruise in company with dozens of similar boats.

Recent and upcoming destinations include:

  • Fal Estuary
  • River Clyde & Rothesay
  • Milford Haven
  • St Malo
  • Plymouth
  • Northern Ireland
  • Dutch Canals
  • Amsterdam (2024)
  • Milford Haven (June 2025)

Sailing in Poole Harbour

With its shallow draft and lifting keel, the Shrimper is ideally suited to Poole Harbour:

  • Capable of sailing in as little as 3ft of water
  • Highly manoeuvrable in confined channels
  • Can safely beach for picnics and leisure stops

It is therefore no surprise that the class is extremely popular locally, with over 100 boats in the area.

Poole Yacht Club Fleet

Poole Yacht Club has a growing and active Shrimper fleet:

  • 25 Shrimper 19s
  • 5 Shrimper 21s

Members enjoy:

  • Local cruising and social sailing
  • Participation in Wednesday cruises
  • Dedicated racing starts (see Racing section)
  • Regular involvement in SOA events

The atmosphere is friendly and inclusive, with a strong sense of camaraderie. Owners frequently share knowledge, experience, and support.

All PYC Shrimper owners receive a contact list of fellow members, ensuring easy communication and collaboration.

Local Activities

The local SOA branch organises a varied sailing programme, including:

  • Trips to Studland, Swanage, and Wareham
  • Social raft-ups and picnics
  • “Round the Island” pursuits (with up to 20 boats participating)

There is typically at least one organised event per week during the season.

Support and Guidance

The PYC Shrimper community prides itself on mutual support:

  • Assistance with launching and recovery
  • Advice on maintenance and repairs
  • Guidance for new or prospective owners

If you are new to Shrimpers or considering ownership, help is always available.
